A video showing famous singer Dauda Kahutu Rarara (popularly known as Rarara) being sprayed with bundles of naira notes during President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s visit to Adamawa State has sparked widespread reactions online.
The President was in Adamawa on Monday, February 16, for a one-day official event during which he launched several projects and commended the efforts of the administration of Governor Umaru Fintiri.
However, the focus of the visit soon changed after a video emerged showing that while Lalala was performing his hit song “Omo Ologo” in the presence of the President, a woman dressed in All Progressives Congress (APC) garb emerged from the crowd and sprayed Lalala with a 1,000 naira note.
As the video circulated on social media, many Nigerians expressed concern, questioning why such behavior was being seen at official government functions, especially as authorities step up efforts to curb the misuse of the naira.
Some commentators have urged the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to investigate the incident.
Under Nigerian law, it is considered a crime to spray, stamp on or mishandle naira during celebrations. Section 21 of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Act prohibits the misuse of the national currency and provides for penalties for offenders.
Furthermore, the Central Bank of Nigeria continues to pursue its Clean Notes Policy, which aims to maintain the quality and durability of the naira by discouraging acts that damage or deface the currency.
