Aisha Achimugu, a well-known business executive and socialite, announced a hunger strike after being arrested by agents from the Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC).
Naija News Earlier reports said the arrest was conducted at 5:00 a.m. Tuesday at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja.
Achimugu’s legal team, led by Chikaosolu Ojukwu (SAN), issued a statement confirming her arrest and subsequently decided to start detaining hunger.
According to the statement, the arrest was on the voluntary return of Achimugu to Nigeria from London to commemorate the invitation of the EFCC, due to ongoing investigations into criminal conspiracy and money laundering.
Ojukwu stressed that Achimugu had previously informed Abuja’s federal high court on Monday that she intends to visit the EFCC on Tuesday in response to the invitation.
“Our client returned on the promise of the court’s invitation to the EFCC but was arrested at the airport,” Ojukwu explained. He further pointed out that arrests contradict the principle of the rule of law.
The EFCC had earlier announced that Achimugu was wanted in March 2025 on allegations of criminal conspiracy and money laundering.
On Monday, the Federal High Court, chaired by Judge IE Ekwo, has ordered Achimugu to appear again in court on Tuesday and Wednesday.
Along with her personal infamous, Achimugu is also a well-known business tycoon, the group managing director and CEO of the Felak Concept Group.
The consortium includes companies in various industries, including engineering, maritime, oil and gas, and information technology.
