Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) Chairman Zacch Addeji reiterated the agency’s commitment to support initiatives to promote tax policy development and build capacity for West Africa’s tax administrators.
Addeji spoke at a meeting held at the Transcorp Hilton Hotel in Abuja on Tuesday at the National Press Conference of the West African Tax Management Forum (WATAF).
He stressed that a well-defined tax policy would promote economic development through effective domestic revenue mobilization.
A statement issued by Dare Adekanmbi, Special Adviser for the Media of FIRS, said that the increase in tax revenue by improving tax management efficiency will benefit the countries of small regions and their citizens.
“Historically, Nigeria has been at the forefront of promoting international tax cooperation and has been a key factor in the development of WATAF, providing member states with technical assistance and capacity-building programs.
“Our country has also been at the forefront of promoting regional cooperation in tax management, recognizing the importance of cooperation in addressing common challenges.
“Nigeria remains committed to supporting programs that promote tax policy development and capacity-building, not only in Nigeria but throughout West Africa, we recognize the importance of domestic resource mobilization in achieving economic development and growth.
“I encourage all participants to actively discuss, use this gathering to build a stronger professional network and work to implement the knowledge gained to improve the tax system,” Adideji told the participants.
He praised WATAF for providing a platform that promotes collaboration and membership capabilities across West Africa.
The meeting participants were from the hosts of Sierra Leone, Ghana, Cote Ivoil, Liberia, Guinea Peso, Guinea, Benin, Burkina Faso and Nigeria.
