A teenager identified as Salim was drowned in the reservoir of the Sokoto water treatment plant on Sunday, May 11.
Witnesses said the young man slipped and fell into a tank while trying to dig some water from the reservoir and worked hard before drowning.
The incident sparked anger among residents with acute water shortages for more than a month.
Locals say the tragedy underscores the severity of the state’s water crisis, with children and adults roaming the city with buckets and Jerry cans every day in search of basic water needs.
Angry residents accused Sokoto State Water Bureau of negligence, saying the agency failed to implement a long-term water crisis solution.
“The situation is unbearable. Every day we wake up looking for water, and now our young life is lost. What else needs to happen before we finish something?” one resident sighed.
