Muyiwa Awoniyi (commonly known as Tems), the manager of Grammy Award-winning Nigerian singer Temilade Openiyi, has opened the artist’s outstanding journey from near savings to global stars.
Speaking in a recent episode Afrobeats Intelligence The podcast Muyiwa tells how their friendship and ultimately business partnerships began when Tems faced a serious financial struggle. According to him, when they first met, the singer had only 200 in her bank account.
“When I was doing podcasts, she and my cousin and I were recording.” Muiwa said. “She has no financial buoyancy in any identity. In fact, she has about 200 naira in her account.”
Despite her situation, Turmus’ generosity left a lasting impression on him. “If I had money, I would buy food for everyone, but the real shock was that even if she had nothing, she would still order food for us. She couldn’t make money at the time. It made me realize that she was different from anyone she met in Nigeria, He added.
Muyiwa Awoniyi continues to share Tems’ professionalism and desire to formalize their working relationships. When Tems asked him to be a manager, she did not hesitate to sign a contract, a rare feature of the industry.
“We agreed on everything, but when I told her that I sent the contract, she was actually chasing me to sign her own position.” He recalled. “It’s new to me. So I said, ‘Forgot a regular deal, let’s start a company together.'”
The two have been friends for about three months before discussing the business, but their mutual respect and vision for the future have cemented a partnership that has since helped Tems become one of the main voices of Afrobeats and R&B.
