A bill aimed at granting a bachelor’s degree to the Polytechnic Institute has passed the second reading in the House.
The bill was initiated by Faud Laguda, a member of the All Progressive Assembly (APC) of Lagos State, aims to amend the Federal Polytechnic Act 2004 to expand the role of Polytechnic in the Nigerian education system.
The proposed amendment includes the addition of the National Board of Technical Education (NBTE) and the Nigerian Manufacturers Association (MAN) to the Council Council. It also seeks to increase the qualification requirements for the principal of the ET and authorizes the academic committee to award a bachelor’s degree in technology (B.Tech) degree.
Laguda led the debate, emphasizing the importance of adapting science and technology to global standards. “The amendment will enable Polytechnic to meet the needs of a changing world while adhering to international best practices,” he said.
He urged lawmakers to support the bill, noting that its goal is to enhance technical education in Nigeria through a more structured science and technology system. When Speaker Abbas called for a voice vote, lawmakers overwhelmingly supported the bill, bringing it closer to becoming law.
