According to his medical team, the health of former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro deteriorated after the surgery earlier this month.
Bolsonaro is currently in the intensive care unit (ICU) of DF Star Hospital in Brasília, and doctors say he is showing signs of “clinical deterioration.” His team said in a statement released on its official X account Thursday that new exams are underway.
The medical team reported that increased blood pressure and worsening liver test results were key issues.
The surgery is associated with intestinal complications caused by the stabbing incident in 2018. Bolsonaro removed a colostomy in January 2019, suffered a gut blockage in 2022 and was hospitalized for abdominal discomfort in 2023.
His latest hospitalization was followed by severe abdominal pain at an event with supporters in northeastern Brazil in the court weeks before his trial.
In March, the Brazilian Supreme Court ruled that Bolsenro must trial the alleged plot to overturn the 2022 election, losing to incumbent President Luis Enosio Lula Lula da Silva. Bolsonaro denied any misconduct.
Despite his condition, the former president posted a photo on his hospital bed on Tuesday, appreciating the public’s prayers and support and thanking him.
Doctors say he will continue to exercise physiotherapy and preventive measures to prevent venous thrombosis.
