Pope Francis was born in Jorge Mario Bergoglio and died on Easter Monday, April 21, 2025 at the age of 88. His death occurred after his residence in Domus sanctae Marthae, Vatican City, following complications of respiratory illness. The Vatican announced that he walked through Cardinal Kevin Farrell, marking the end of a transformative 12-year pope.

    Historic Pope

Pope Francis was elected on March 13, 2013 and was the first Jesuit and the first Latino to ascend to the Pope. His tenure is characterized by a commitment to simplicity, social justice and advocacy for marginalized communities. He chose the name Francis to commemorate Saint Francis in Assisi, reflecting his dedication to humility and care for the poor.

Under his leadership, the Catholic Church has seen significant shifts, including a focus on environmental issues, with the 2015 encyclopedia Laudato SI addressing climate change and ecological responsibility. He also stressed the importance of compassion and compassion, especially during the extraordinary jubilation of 2016.

    Advocate marginalized

Pope Francis is known for his efforts to make the church closer to the churches outside the society. He has always stressed the plight of refugees and immigration and urged countries to adopt more sympathetic policies. His visit to conflict and impoverished areas underlined his commitment to peace and human dignity.

He also strives to engage in interfaith dialogue to promote relationships with leaders of various religious traditions to promote mutual understanding and cooperation.

    Challenges and criticisms

Although many praised his progressive position on various issues, Pope Francis was criticized by conservatives and liberals within the church. Conservatives expressed concern about his approach to traditional doctrines, while progressives were disappointed by his reluctance to adhere to women and fully embrace LGBTQ+ inclusion.

Despite these challenges, he remains firm in guiding the church to address contemporary social problems, emphasizing dialogue and pastoral care.

The Last Days and Global Condolences

In the weeks after his death, Pope Francis was hospitalized with double pneumonia but appeared on Easter Sunday to bless the believers of St. Peter’s Square. His death has caused sorrow and tribute from global leaders and communities.

U.S. Vice President JD Vance met with the Pope shortly before his death and expressed his grief, saying, “My heart pays tribute to millions of Christians around the world who love him.”

Prime Minister Narendra Modi remembers him as a “beacon of compassion, humility and spiritual courage”, emphasizing his dedication to the poor and overwhelming.

French President Emmanuel Macron pointed out that Pope Francis “want the church to bring joy and hope to the poorest,” highlighting his efforts to unite with mankind and nature.

    Funeral arrangements and inheritance

According to his will, Pope Francis would be buried in the Cathedral of Santa Maria Maggiore in Rome, choosing a simple wooden coffin to reflect his commitment to humility.

The Vatican announced that the Pope’s meeting to elect its successor is scheduled to be held at the Sistine Church from May 6, 2025 to May 11, 2025.
