A man identified as Mamman Shettima Baba was arrested for a cruel young B3 student for picking mangoes from Pompomari Housing Estate in Maiduguri, Borno State.
Baba was arrested with his wife on Friday, March 21, 2025, who filmed the video of the attack.
The incident was captured in the video and circulated widely on social media, showing Shettima Baba repeatedly whipping the girl with a thick stick while his wife recorded the attack, encouraging him to “beat her more.”
According to witnesses, the girl and her friends were on their way home from school when they found a mango tree inside. Out of young curiosity, they entered the compound and picked some mangoes.
However, some Almajiri’s children caught one of the girls and handed her over to the woman who lived in the house.
In turn, she ordered her husband to punish the child violently.
The Nigerian Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC) responded quickly to the virus video and arrested the suspect.
Legion commander Abdulrazaq Haroon confirmed the arrest, adding that in the preliminary investigation, Shettima Baba admitted to the attack, demonstrating his behavior by claiming that the student had been picking mangoes from the tree.
However, the brutal acts of the attack have caused public outrage, with legal practitioners, child rights activists and government officials demanding strict legal proceedings against the suspects.
Meanwhile, Borno State Education Director Lawan Abbah Wakilbe and the Judicial Commissioner both assured the public that they would serve the justice.
Wakilbe gave assurances when he visited NSCSC Command and praised the officers who intervened quickly.
