Tonight, white smoke rolled from the chimney of the Sistine Church in Rome, and a new pope has been elected.
133 cardinal voters gathered at the Vatican’s Sistine Church to elect the new pope.
He will soon appear in the central window of St. Peter’s Basilica.
Cardinal Dominique Mamberti, a 73-year-old Frenchman, was born in Morocco and is expected to make the announcement unless he is elected as the pope himself.
133 cardinals were voted by the late successors of Francis who were secretly meeting on Wednesday night.
After the Cardinal closed the door, the first smoke arrived at about three hours and 15 minutes, disappointed with the Vatican crowd.
This morning, another smoke came, meaning that before the breakout tonight, no candidate received at least two-thirds of the majority of 89 votes.
