A Nigerian woman living in the UK tells a shocking incident where she was arrested and arrested and detained for using “drugs” instead of “drugs.”
In the widely shared Tiktok video, she describes her visiting a pharmacy to buy medicine for her sick husband. On the phone call with him, she innocently called the drug “drug”, not realizing that people nearby misunderstood her statement.
Shortly thereafter, police arrived and detained her, asking about the whereabouts of the “drugs”. Although she tried to clarify that she was referring to the drug, her explanation was initially skeptical.
She was then taken to the police station, where she was detained and questioned. Authorities searched for her home even before she finally released her. The woman humorously attributes her experience to her use of “Nigerian English”.
She said: “Yesterday I was arrested last night and was detained. Now, I’m going home. Story time. So, yesterday, I went to the pharmacy to buy some medication for my husband. So when I got home, when you use it , you will become strong.
“Okay. Don’t know that people who are approaching me are like “drugs, drugs, drugs, drugs,” but I didn’t bother” because I don’t think I did anything wrong. Before I knew it, the police came. When they come, they’re like, “Where are the drugs.”
“What medicine do I say? It’s actually what I’m talking about (showing the medicine she got) because I went to buy this medicine for my husband because he was uncomfortable. I told them ‘Oh, drugs, I mean . Then they said “drugs” and I said “yes”. They didn’t believe me anyway. “They took me to the police station. They detained me. They asked me questions.
“They didn’t release me until they searched for my house. This Nigerian English not only put me in trouble, but also in trouble.”
