A South African couple reportedly put aside their wedding because the doctor’s bride insisted that she would leave her maiden name after getting married.
According to X user Kuanele, who shared the story, the woman wanted to keep her maiden name because she was the first doctor for her family.
But her man said she had to have a name if he was to pay the bride.
“The chat on the broadcast RN. The chat is that a couple has already married in BC and he wants her name, but she wants a double barrel, she is a doctor. She is the first doctor in the family, so she wants to keep the name,” she wrote.
“The man said that if he was going to pay lobola, she had to have a last name, and she had to name it.”
The post is currently producing different responses, with most supporting the doctors, while others (especially men) support the man.
“After all the sacrifices and love, my parents poured their PhD, and I refused to give up the name that carries my history and their efforts. I will not be the name of a family that I don’t know about my life, nor do I contribute to my growth in the name of a marriage,” wrote a doctoral student Idayat Jinadu.
One Bongani wrote: “MBCHB, California (SA), LLB. Men stay away from these women, their professions form their entire personalities and their representations. Classism is justified.”
