The White House reiterated its plan to impose “big tariffs” on April 2, with President Donald Trump preparing to announce reciprocal taxes amid a major escalation of his trade war.
Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed Thursday, March 20th, despite earlier comments from Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent that Trump remains committed to the date, suggesting that Washington may have first conducted an assessment of its tariffs and trade barriers to the country.
Leavitt stressed that there will be a major announcement on reciprocal trade, noting that the president will highlight “unfair trade practices” that have led to the United States being “deprived by every country around the world, frankly.”
Trump’s plan against U.S. allies and competitors is expected to introduce tariffs to deal with what he believes is unfair. However, details of these measures have not been disclosed.
Bessent previously told Fox Business on April 2 that “every country receives a number we believe represents their tariffs”, adding that Washington will detail details of “tariff levels, non-tariff barriers, currency manipulation, unfair funding and labor suppression.” ”
He suggested that if countries change their trade practices, tariffs may not be imposed. “If adjustments are made, we won’t build a tariff wall.”
Bessent also stated that some responsibilities may not be effective immediately if negotiations are scheduled in advance, or if the state seeks rapid discussions with Washington.
