Theresa Chenjerai, a 49-year-old woman from Zimbabwe, was arrested for allegedly planning to release an armed robber from prison and hide her in her home.
Chenjerai and her accomplice Munyaradzi Zakkaria are accused of offering a $150 bribe to detectives to affect the court case, such as New America. The two were filed on Saturday and were remanded in custody until a bail hearing on March 3.
Police accused Chenjerai of being the leader of a criminal group suspected of armed robbery. She married Andrew Chenjerai, a suspected armed robber, on bail two counts of violent crimes. Authorities believe she helped ensure his release from prison and he will be tried on March 11.
Furthermore, police claimed that Chenjerai played a role in ensuring the release of Zakkaria, which provided time for two charges of armed robbery. After her release, she allegedly provided him with shelter, prompting her to worry that she might organize a gang for further criminal activities.
Chenjerai and Zakkaria reportedly exposed the case when they tried to bribe detective Kwashira on February 27, hoping to influence detective testimony in support of their colleague, Nickson Tapuwa Mazaranye, who faced 15 robbery charges. However, the detective reported a bribery attempt that led to the stinging operation that led to Zacharya’s arrest at the Norton Police Department.
Zakkaria allegedly admitted that Chenjerai sent him a bribe, and the phone records confirmed their involvement in the program. Authorities opposed the bail of the suspects on the grounds that they may interfere with the investigation or continue their criminal activities.
