Senior journalist and broadcaster Jimi Disu expressed dissatisfaction with the current status of Nigerian music, especially for Grammy Award artists.
In a recent podcast appearance, Disu questioned the artistic value of some award-winning Nigerian musicians, indicating a lack of depth and substance in their work.
“I regret to say this when I look at some Nigerians even [won] Grammys, I know it’s not music. ” Disu said.
He believes that real musical art involves raising awareness and solving social problems, and takes legends like Fela Kuti and Bob Marley as examples.
“How could Fela Kuti come with all his advocacy and talent in music… Then how could he never get it? Because he is an activist. He is raising awareness.”
“Or why did Bob Marley never win a Grammy?” ”
Disu stressed that the music industry often favors entertainment that is considered “safe” while ignoring artists who challenge the status quo.
He asserted: “It’s entertainment. It’s a safe offer. It’s a safe one. But those who raise awareness, they will never get anywhere nearby.”
He ended his support for artists like Femi Kuti, who continued to use music as a platform for activism:
“I’m glad he’s just [doesn’t] No more disturbing yourself. ”
Disu’s comments sparked discussions about the standards of music honors and the role of music in social change.
