Six people were killed in a tragic accident at the regional command bus station in Ennove, Anambra.
The devastating incident occurred Friday night when a truck filled with cement lost control and crashed into a nearby residential building.
Witnesses indicated that a brake failure on the truck caused the driver to lose control, causing a chain reaction to collision with surrounding buildings, and finally crashed into a house adjacent to the main road.
“This incident happened late Friday most people were in their yard,” the witness said.
“The roar of the crash reminded residents and other passers-by the scene. It then created a noisy scene when residents and passers-by tried to remove some of the stuck victims.
“The driver of the trailer lost control at Ugwu-Akpati Ozu in Nnewi and crashed at ME Court Junction near the command bus station of the Nnewi Police Station.
“The truck cleaned up several buildings and some people and then hit the residential building, k!ling children from about five families.
“It was an unfortunate event when some people gathered on various compounds celebrating Valentine’s Day. The driver was also kidnapped in the accident, while several victims were still stuck under the truck.”
The sad mother of the child who lost her life in the accident was emotionally excited while the lifeless body lay on the scene of the devastating crash as residents tried to comfort her.
The incident was confirmed on Saturday, Margaret Onabe, spokesman for the Anambra Federal Road Safety Force (FRSC) Command, said the crash occurred late Friday.
Onabe attributes the cause of the fatal accident to excessive speed, brake failure and out of control.
Onabe said six male and female adults and three girls were victims of the crash, adding that the children and female adults were killed while the rest were injured.
“Among the victims of the deceased, a male adult and a female were trapped inside the building. Nnewi’s FRSC rescue team took the relief and the body of the deceased was transferred to the Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital in Nnnewi Akammili Umudim.”
Anambra State Police spokesman Tochukwu Ikenga also confirmed the incident.
“Preliminary information suggests that the fatal accident was caused by a brake failure. Unfortunately, six people were killed while two others were seriously injured.”
