
Alumni and current student (innocence) of Unimimaid joined with relevant citizens of Borno State, strongly opposed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s recent decision to rename the institution in the late former president Muhammadu Buhari.
The renaming was announced at the Federal Executive Committee (FEC) meeting held at the Presidential Villa of Abuja on Thursday, July 17, 2025. President Tinob announced that the institution has since been known as Muhammadu Buhari University in honor of his predecessor.
“It’s not just the name”
The announcement has since sparked widespread protests, especially with those liaison with universities. In strongly worded statements, opponents describe the move as emotionally and historically deaf.
“Maiduguri University is more than just a name. It is a powerful symbol of resilience, academic excellence and cultural heritage, especially in the face of insecurity that once threatened the Northeast,” said Dr. Statement reading.
Online petition growth momentum
Shortly after the renaming announcement, a public petition was launched online, and more than 9,000 signatures were quickly accumulated in less than 48 hours. The petition calls on President Tinob to reverse the renaming and retain the university’s original identity.
“We, alumni, students and relevant citizens, have written this heartfelt appeal to your Excellency…The deepest respect for the memories and legacy of the late President Muhammadu Buhari…We believe that University Maiduguri The petition says.
Recommended alternatives to commemorate Buhari
In respecting the respect of the late former president, the petitioners raised alternative institutions that they believed were more symbolic to this tribute:
- Daura Federal Transport University, located in the hometown of Buhari
- Nigerian Army University considering Buhari’s military background
“These institutions are closely linked to President Buhari’s personal legacy and will serve as meaningful memorials without the need to remove deep identities that are not religiously illustrious.” They added.
Finally appealing to President Tinub
The petition ends with a passionate plea:
“Reserving this name is not a political status; it is a plea for continuity, emotional attachment and integrity of brands that have endured time and conflict. Let us respect the legacy of former President Buhari and the soul of Unimaid without erasing either.”
As the petition continues to gain support on social media and in civic places, everyone is now watching President Tinob’s administration to reconsider the controversial decision.
