President Bola Ahmed Tinubu announced major leadership changes at several federal universities, including the University of Abuja, which has now been renamed Yakubu Gowon University.
These changes are immediately effective.
In its newly renamed Yakubu Gowon University, President Tinubu dissolved the entire governing committee and put Professor Aisha Sani Maikudi as Vice-Chancellor.
President Tinob appointed Professor Latrixa Manco to replace her with six months of acting vice president.
Bayo Onanuga, the President’s Special Adviser for Information and Strategy, revealed this in a statement.
Senator Lanre Tejuoso is currently the pro-principal of Makurdi University and has also been appointed as the pro-principal of Yakubu Gowon University. He will be inherited by Senator Joy Emordi, who is now appointed as the pro-principal of Alvan Ikoku University of Education.
Further leadership changes occur at the University of Nigeria at the University of Nigeria (UNN), where President Tinob will take Professor Polycarp Emeka Chigbu from him as Vice President before his term expires on February 14.
Professor Oguejiofu T. Ujam was appointed as the new acting vice president at UNN for six months and had the same restrictions on failure to meet permanent positions.
UNN’s reorganization also changed the role of pro-principal, and General Ike Nwachukwu was reassigned to Uyo University of Uyo. Engineer Olubunmi Kayode Ojo has been appointed as UNN’s new career president and has previously held similar positions at Lokoja Federal University and Oye-Ekiti Federal University.
Professor Zubairu Tajo Abdullahi, the current pro-president of UYO University, will now take over as OJO at Lokoja Federal University.
Senator Sani Store has been appointed as the new pro-principal of Alvan Ikoku University of Education, taking over as Senator Joy Emordi.
Olugbenga, an attorney for UNN, is appointed as the new career president of Nnamdi Azikiwe University in Anambra State Awka.
All appointment and redistribution decisions were effective immediately, and President Tinubu stressed that these changes were part of his government’s extensive efforts to revitalize the Nigerian higher education system.
Onanuga said the restructuring aims to strengthen governance, ensure academic achievement and promote accountability in higher education sectors across the country.
