- President Bola Tinubu has nominated Professor Joash Ojo Amupitan (SAN) of Kogi State as the new Chairman of INEC, succeeding Professor Mahmood Yakubu.
- Ampitan, a 58-year-old law professor and a senior defense lawyer in Nigeria, is described by Tinubu as an apolitical man of integrity. His nomination is awaiting screening by the Senate.

President Bola Tinu has nominated Professor Joash Ojo Amupitan (San) from Kogi State in north-central Nigeria as the new Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
The nomination was confirmed by the State Council following the expiry of Professor Mahmood Yakubu’s term in October 2025.
Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, said the president described Ampitan as “apolitical and a man of integrity”. His nomination will now be sent to the Senate for screening.
Amupitan, 58, is a Professor of Law and Vice-Chancellor (Administration) of the University of Jos and also serves as Vice-Chancellor of the Joseph Ayo Babalola University. Senior lawyer in Nigeria since 2014, specializing in corporate law, evidence law and corporate governance.
He holds degrees from the University of Jos, including a Doctor of Laws (2007), and is the author of several notable books on Nigerian law.
