The midfielder suffered multiple fractures in his neck and nerve damage, leaving him at risk of “high paraplegia”, which could lead to permanent paralysis from the chest down. He was taken to hospital, underwent surgery and is currently in stable condition.
Guangxi Pingguo Football Club thanked fans for their concern and said it would provide an update on his recovery after further medical evaluation.
Asamoah’s accident has reignited debate over player safety and dangerous pitchside structures.
