Nigeria’s Super Hawks are stepping up the game as they prepare for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers with Rwanda.
All 23 players fully participated in a thorough training led by coach Eric Chelle.
The nearly two hours of practice held at one of a training course in Kigali provides some great insights into the team’s strategy and areas of focus.
Key observations of training courses
1. Victor Boniface’s fitness assessment
Forward Victor Boniface, who just joined from Bayer Leverkusen, seems to have struggled a bit with his fitness during the meeting.
His limited time at the German club seemed to have affected his performance as he lagged behind in several exercises, highlighting the need for some extra conditioning.
2. Emphasize goalkeeper’s kicking skills
Coach Chelle obviously modernized the team’s game style by honing the goalkeeper’s skills under his feet.
These exercises are specifically designed to improve shooters’ ball handling capabilities to ensure they can be seamlessly integrated into team accumulation.
3. Promote remote shooting
The coaching staff is keen to encourage players to take advantage of long-distance shooting opportunities.

They focused specifically on winger Samuel Chukwueze, urging him to make the most of the available space and challenge the goalkeeper from different angles, demonstrating a tactical mindset that prioritizes active offense.
4. Strategic focus on high pressure
Most of the training is dedicated to implementing high-pressure strategies.
Coach Chell emphasized the importance of quickly participating in the defense immediately after losing property, strengthening the collective responsibility among players to disrupt opponents’ games without delay.
5. Integration of ball training
During the meeting, a series of ball-centric training was concentrated. This does emphasize the expectation of the coaching staff from players, maintaining possession even when the pressure is getting higher and flaunts their ball control skills.
This approach is perfectly in line with the property-based style of play, which is designed to take charge of the midfield and control the pace of the game.
Looking to the future
These training insights give a glimpse of Coach Chell’s strategic vision as the Super Hawks move forward in the World Cup qualifiers.
Focus on fitness, tactical flexibility and technical capabilities demonstrate a comprehensive approach to creating a competitive and united team ready to meet future challenges.
