U.S. President Donald Trump revealed on Wednesday, February 12 that he will meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Saudi Arabia to conduct peaceful negotiations on the ongoing Ukrainian conflict.
The planned meeting could be held in the near future and is expected to involve Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, who played a crucial role in the recent Russian-U.S. prisoner exchange. After the Saudi lecture, the Kremlin also invited Trump to visit Moscow.
Trump has been working to quickly resolve the war for nearly three years and he shows that Ukraine’s desire to join NATO, which is Russia’s main need, is “unrealistic”. However, he denied that Ukraine would be excluded from the peace process, stressing that Kiev’s interests would be taken into account. Trump said he and Putin had agreed to start negotiations immediately and that teams on both sides were working on potential agreements.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky did not speak with Putin on a phone call, but later spoke with Trump, who assured Zelensky that both he and Putin wanted peace. Zelensky in turn reiterates Ukraine’s position that its “independence, territorial integrity and sovereignty” cannot be compromised.
