Trump lifts protection of 500,000 Haitian immigrants

The Trump administration canceled an extension of the temporary protection status granted by former President Joe Biden to more than 500,000 Haitians on Thursday, February 20.

The United States grants temporary protection status to foreign citizens who are unable to return home safely due to war, natural disasters or other “extraordinary” conditions.

The Biden administration has expanded it to Haitians for 18 months to February 2026, but it will now expire on August 3.

“President Trump and I are returning TPS to its original position: temporary status,” Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said in a department statement.

“This is part of President Trump’s revocation policies that are magnets for illegal immigration and are inconsistent with the law,” the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) statement said.

According to U.S. government estimates, the number of Haitians eligible for protection soared from 57,000 in 2011 to 520,694 in 2024.

A spokesman for the Department of Homeland Security said Biden provided the TPS extension “was much longer than the reason or necessary.”

Trump said in his election that immigration is “poisoning the blood of America” - quickly ordered a review of the entire TPS program to return to office.

During his campaign, he said without any basis that Ohio City recently saw Haitian immigrants stealing and eating residents’ cats and dogs.

“The Trump administration is depriving stability from the million Haitians who have built their lives here (children, workers, parents and neighbors) who have become indispensable to the American community and contribute to our economy ” At the Immigration Center, an organization that advances policy solutions for aspiring citizens.

“This reckless decision is not just hurting them; it undermines the stability of businesses, families and local economies that rely on them.”

Last month, the Trump administration revoked the deportation of more than 600,000 Venezuelans in the United States.

“The people of this country want this dirt. They want their communities to be safe,” Norm said on Fox News in January.

Haiti suffered a devastating earthquake as a result of the devastating earthquake, which has suffered prolonged political unrest for decades, while violence by armed groups has increased.
