UK High Commission responds to reports on visa restrictions for overdue visas for Nigerians and others

Britain’s response to the report suggests that this could impose visa restrictions on certain ethnic groups, and citizens are reportedly more likely to be overdue visas.

According to the report, the UK Ministry of Home Affairs identified Pakistan, Nigeria and Sri Lanka as countries where nationals frequently overdue and subsequently seek asylum.

The report claims that citizens of these countries may face stricter conditions when applying for a UK work or study visa, as part of an effort to tighten immigration controls.

In response, a spokesperson for the British High Commission of Nigeria issued a statement reaffirming the UK’s commitment to responsibly managing immigration while maintaining close ties with Nigeria. “We will continue to review the immigration system to allow legal immigration and legal travel while preventing those who may abuse abuse,” the spokesperson said.

The statement added: “Our UK and Nigeria have a strong and lasting connection with people and we continue to work closely with the Nigerian government to deal with irregular immigration.”

Nigerians have felt the impact of recent UK immigration reforms over the past two years, especially in terms of student visas and work permits. The review of immigration rules and tighter scrutiny has prompted many Nigerians to consider alternative destinations, and the United States has become a significant option. However, the United States has also implemented stricter immigration policies. Visa restrictions have been extended under former President Donald Trump, including warnings that international students with valid visas may face deportation if they are found to not serve the country’s best interest.
