U.S. President Donald Trump revealed that he had received a letter from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy saying he was preparing to negotiate with Russia and sign a rare mineral agreement.
“Ukraine is ready to enter the negotiating table as soon as possible to bring lasting peace closer. No one wants peace more than the Ukrainians.
“’My team and I are ready to work under President Trump’s strong leadership for continued peace’,” Trump quoted Zelensky’s writing.
Trump also said Zelensky told him that he was ready to sign a rare earth mineral with the United States.
Ukraine has not commented on the letter yet.
The U.S. president also said that he had a “serious discussion” with Russia and that he “received a strong signal that they were ready for peace.”
Trump did not indicate when the negotiations occurred or whether he was involved in the talks in person.
He added: “It’s time to end this meaningless war. If you want to end the war, you have to talk to both sides.”
Earlier Tuesday, Zelensky described the White House showdown with Trump as “regrettable” after the U.S. announced a moratorium on military aid to Kyiv.
Zelensky said, “It’s time to make things right,” after Trump accused him of not preparing to attend the negotiating table.
Ukrainian leaders also outlined how to end the first phase of the war.
Last week, an Oval Office meeting between Zelensky and U.S. officials will end, with the two parties signing an agreement that will allow the United States to obtain rare earth minerals in Ukraine.
After the clash, Trump accused Zelensky of “gambling with World War III”, the Ukrainian delegation left without signing the deal. “Be ready to come back in peace,” Trump told Zelensky.
