
A tragic drowning claimed the life of a Unimaid student, while another was rescued after they swam in the Gwange River Bank in Maiduguri, Borno State.
The incident occurred around 7:00 pm on March 14, 2025, when students at the time (Abafras Abdiel from the Ministry of Forestry) and students from the Ministry of Geology Silas Sule went to the Gwange River Bank behind the ECWA church to swim.
During the diving, both students were submerged in the river, prompting an emergency response.
Zagazola Makama of the joint rescue team, including police, divers and firefighters, was immediately mobilized to the scene, according to security analysts.
The rescue team managed to retrieve two victims and sent them to a state specialist hospital in Maiduguri State.
Although Abafras Abdiel was sent for treatment, unfortunately Silas Sule was certified by D3AD.
After that, his body was deposited in the hospital for autopsy and further investigation.
Authorities have urged students and residents to exercise caution when engaging in rivers near bodies of water, especially during dry seasons.
