
Early on Sunday, March 9, the U.S. Secret Service opened fire on a man after an armed confrontation near the White House.
The incident happened within minutes of the White House, and alerted as law enforcement responded to potential threats.
The confrontation took place near the intersection of Northwest 17th Street and F Street, about a 5-minute walk from the White House.
Early reports from Washington, D.C. police warned that “suicides” might have traveled from Indiana, prompting authorities to track the man’s vehicle.
The car is located near the Eisenhower Executive Office Building, which is adjacent to the White House.
According to US Secret Service spokesman Anthony Guglielmi, the suspect “waving a gun and then an armed confrontation occurred during which we were fired by our personnel.”
“Thankfully, there was no harm in Secret Service agents.”
The man was taken to the hospital after the shooting, but his current condition is still unclear.
The Secret Service confirmed: “The status of the individual is currently unknown.”
