Uche Nwosu, a prominent member of All Progressive Conferences (APC), warned the federal government on Saturday against promoting the idea of citizens to obtain gun permits, believing that such a move would exacerbate existing insecurities across the country.
NWOSU, previously served as Chief of Staff for the former IMO State Governor Rochas Okorochaexpressed his concerns in a virtual media briefing.
Naija News NWOSU’s remarks are reportedly a statement on Friday’s youth and sports minister Solomon Dalung, rights activist, reportedly calland other members of the Nigerian Patriots League, who advocate Nigerians’ right to self-defense in guns.
NWOSU refuted this view, asserting that allowing citizens to access firearms is not a viable solution to ongoing violence in affected areas.
He said “I don’t support people being encouraged to carry weapons with them because it will become a lawless country.
“Instead, I think more security agents should be deployed to those struggling areas so that this can be resolved.
“This can cause trouble when individuals start carrying weapons. Some people can be easily angry and let that emotion drive them to do things they shouldn’t do.
“In addition, these bandits sometimes come from abroad. They are not people from these communities.
“They come from outside, perform their actions, and go back to their source. Another suggestion for me is that there should be community policing.
“As I said, this is one of the most difficult areas for the government, and there should be the courage to go to rural areas.”
APC leaders also praised President Bola Tinubu for assigning its security chiefs to the responsibility of stopping violence and restoring peace in affected communities.
This reflects the true nature of the leader, he said, and he prioritizes the safety and well-being of his constituents.
“I also want to commend President Bola Tinubu. He also put in the work to ensure that these killings cease.
“I had a meeting with the security chief and heard the NSA say the president gave them instructions that this killing must stop and they are doing it,He said.
