Minister of Communications and Digital Economy Dr Bosun Tijani explained that the 50% increase in tariffs for telecom companies was to ensure meaningful access to telecom services for Nigerians.
Tijani said the decision to increase telecom tariffs is difficult, but the government must balance the need to allow businesses to develop sustainably and ensure citizens access to telecommunications services.
According to Tijani, “We have to make sure that when they invest, we can keep them floating. This is a department that employs nearly half a million people in this country, including the value chain.”

He noted that the federal government hired KPMG to conduct a study to determine the best tariff allowances, resulting in a 50% increase.

Tijani stressed that the government’s priority is meaningful access to ensure citizens have access to quality access to telecom services.
“We don’t want our employees to have only access to telecommunications services. We want it to make sense. The quality you get is extremely important,” he said.
