The federal government insists that the tech giant must pay $290 million fines from Nigerian regulators.
This comes after Meta was punished for multiple violations, including suspected violations of data privacy, unapproved advertising, and failure to comply with local data protection regulations.
Despite Meta’s challenge in court, the federal high court in Abuja upheld the penalties and ordered compliance with the company by the end of June.
The FG has now reiterated its position, urging the Lord to respect Nigeria’s laws and fulfill its financial obligations.
However, Meta criticized the fine as “unrealistic” and suggested that there is a possibility of shutting down Facebook and Instagram services in the country if the situation remains unresolved.
