Kirsty Coventry was elected the first female and African president of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) during a series of activities by the Minister of Sports of Zimbabwe.
The 41-year-old former swimmer from Zimbabwe won a full majority in the first round of voting, surpassing six other candidates, including expected leader Lord Sebastian Coe.
Coventry will take over her eight-year semester from Thomas Bach on June 23, 2025.
Famous Olympic athlete at the helm of the IOC
Coventry’s impressive swimming career paved the way for her leadership.
She is the most decorated Olympic athlete in Zimbabwe, winning seven of the country’s eight Olympics.
Her praise includes gold medals in the 200m backstroke at the 200-meter Athens and 2008 Beijing Games.
In addition to her athletic achievements, Coventry has made significant contributions to the Sports Authority and served on the Executive Committee of the International Olympic Committee and served as Chairman of the Athlete Committee, where she has been a strong advocate for athlete welfare and development.

After being elected, Coventry shared her heartfelt gratitude and put forward her vision for the Olympics.

Thomas Bach, the outgoing president of the International Olympic Committee, expressed his congratulations and recognized the importance of her groundbreaking appointment.
Russian President Vladimir Putin also shared his blessings, expressing his belief that her athletic background and commitment to upholding the lofty ideals of the Olympics will pave the way for her success in this famous role.
