At least 144 people were reported to have died and more than 700 were injured in the Myanmar earthquake.

Nigeria News Nalin At least 144 people were killed and 730 injured in the powerful 7.7-magnitude earthquake that hit Myanmar on Friday, according to the head of the country’s military government.

A strong magnitude 6.4 aftershock also hit Myanmar, with both Thailand and China tremoring.

According to military officials, the earthquake triggered the collapse of buildings hundreds of miles away in Thailand.

At least three people died in the U.S. capital, officials said, and authorities are releasing 81 people believed to be trapped under the ruins of underbuilt high-rises in the city.

Myanmar, one of Asia’s poorest countries, stood out from the civil war triggered by the 2021 military coup. Weak infrastructure makes it insufficient to respond to major natural disasters.

The fragments of the country were pieced together by militias, making it difficult to collect reliable information. The military also regularly cuts communications in conflict areas.
