    Court sentences herders to Ondo’s 10-year leap

    • An Ondo court has sentenced a Fulani herder to jail in the state.

    • The suspect was sentenced to a total of 10 years in prison for crimes including the destruction of private property.

    A district court in Odo has sentenced a Fulani herder to 10 years in prison.

    The suspect was reportedly sentenced to sit in Akur’s court for violating the state’s anti-open grazing law.

    The prosecutor’s lawyer said in a speech at the hearing that the defendant destroyed a farmland worth 50 million N.

    The defendant was arraigned for five counts involving conspiracy, illegal grazing, malicious damage, violation of peace and illegal entry.

    He was arrested on October 27, 2033 for these.

    The prosecution lawyer’s speech to the herder allowed his cattle to graz on the land, without permission, the act violated the 2021 “Ondo State Livestock Feeding and Grazing Act”.

    She further said the incident escalated when a herder who had initially escaped returned with six other people, allegedly shooting at the farm, destroying a motorcycle in the process.

    The presided judge Damilola Sekoni made the verdict, the defendant was guilty and sentenced him to two years without a fifth fine.

    Therefore, the court sentenced Dan-Bello to four years in prison for the first time without the option of a fine. The second fine of two years, the fine of N50,000; and the third and fourth year.

    However, he also has the option to pay the sum of Nai 2 million to compensate the complaint.
