The Super Eagles’ 2026 World Cup dreams suffered a major blow as the Democratic Republic of Congo advanced to the continental play-offs after a dramatic penalty shootout at the Prince Moulay Abdullah Stadium in Rabat on Sunday. Nigeria’s qualifying hopes have come to a heartbreaking end, marking the second consecutive year the Super Eagles have missed out on the world stage.
After 120 minutes of regulation and overtime, the game ended 1-1 and the high-stakes game went into a penalty shootout. Nigeria took the lead in the 3rd minute through Frank Onyeka, but DR Congo equalized in the 32nd minute through M. Elia.
The Democratic Republic of Congo defeated Nigeria 4-3 in a penalty shootout to secure a spot in the intercontinental play-offs.
