The ECOWAS (Ecowas) in West Africa is facing a major diplomatic challenge. Because of Mali, the deadline for Niger and Burkina Faso will withdraw from the regional group today on January 29, 2025.

Omar Touray, chairman of the Ecowas Commission, is expected to introduce the future of the media and its efforts with the government leadership of the three Sahele countries.

In January 2024, in Mali, Niger and Burkina Faso officially withdrawn the Ring ENT that immediately withdraws it, the export process was triggered in January 2024. The reason is that the group’s group against the group against the country’s military coup The reaction was dissatisfied.

However, according to Article 91 of the revised ECOWAS Treaty, a country must provide one year before withdrawing the official. At that time, it expired today.

ECOWAS has been to save the relationship with these three states at the last moment of diplomatic efforts. The group sent an official letter to meet the government.

Joel Ahofodji, the head of Ecowas Communication, confirmed the publicity, but pointed out that no response was received.

“Ecowas has sent letters of request meetings. We are waiting for official response from the country,” Ahofodji said.

Nevertheless, there were no signs that the three countries were re -considered their decision.

Tight situation and the formation of the Sahele Alliance (AES)

Mali, Niger and Burkina Faso accused ECOWAS of abandoning its core principles and extending external pressure, especially from France and Western allies.

After the sanctions made by the Economic Communist Economic Bicycle on the military coup, the three countries kept a distance from the regional groups and formed the Sahele Alliance (AES).

AES aims to strengthen military cooperation and regional security, get rid of traditional Western partnerships, and maintain consistent with Russia and other non -traditional allies.

At the 66th ordinary meeting in December 2024, Ecowas leaders expanded the mediation tasks of the Senegal President Bassirou Faye and Door President Fauuregnainbé to continue with Foreign exchanges in three countries.

At present, President Bola Tinubu, Chairman of Chairman Ecowas, reiterated the demand for diplomatic efforts and emphasized the need to protect citizens in the region.

The crisis of Ecowas originated from a series of military coup that occurred between 2020 and 2023:

President of Mali (August 18, 2020) -The president of Ibrahim Boubacarkeïta was fired in military rebellion.

Burkina Faso (September 30, 2022): The interim President Paul-Henri Sandaogo Damiba was deleted eight months after taking office.

Niger (July 26, 2023) -Panician Mohamed Bazoum was detained by the Presidential Guard, and General Abdourahamane Tchiani announced that he was a new leader.

The development of these situations shocked the stability of Ecowas and prompted sanctions to further exacerbate the relationship between regional groups and government leaders.
