Nigerian rapper and activist Forarin Falana, commonly known as Falz, has been invading the political crisis of the River State in the aftermath of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in the region.
Visited social media on Tuesday, March 18, 2025, Forged Strongly criticized the president’s decision, believing that there is no constitution that allows the suspension of democratically elected governors. He questioned the reasons for this move, pointing out: “River State, there is absolutely no law that allows the president to suspend a governor. The governor was elected to his post and could only be removed from office through impeachment. And, is the river in war in war? Is there an actual collapse of public order? Is there a threat to the Federation?”
Falz’s reaction came minutes after President Tinubu spoke to the country about ongoing political unrest in the River State. In his speech, the president invoked Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s constitutional violations, including the intentional collapse of the government’s legislative branch.
According to Tinubu, the Supreme Court has ruled against Fubara’s actions, stressing that governance cannot work effectively without all three weapons of the government. He also stressed the governor’s failure to facilitate the passage of the appropriations bill and condemned the rise of radical activity in the region, especially the destruction of oil pipelines.
The President, invoked Article 305 of the 1999 Constitution (amended), formally declared a state of emergency, suspending Governor Fobara, his deputy, and all elected members of the Rivers State Capitol for the first six months. Deputy Admiral Ibokette Ibas (RTD) was appointed as interim administrator overseeing the affairs of the state.
Meanwhile, President Tinob assured the public that the Rivers judiciary will continue to operate independently. He also said the emergency measures aim to restore constitutional order, governance and security in the state.
Finally, Falz’s reaction sparked widespread debate, with many Nigerians questioning the legitimacy of President Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers and its impact on the country’s democratic governance.
