Former Police Attorney General (IGP) Solomon Arase is dead

Neither his family nor the Nigerian police force issued a formal statement confirming the development as of the time of submission of the report. Arase was the 18th police attorney general in Nigeria and was later appointed Chairman of the Police Commission (PSC).

Prior to becoming the IGP, he was in charge of the Crime Intelligence and Investigation Bureau, the top intelligence unit of the police force. Born on June 21, 1956 in the Owan West Local Government Area, Edo Prefecture, Arase studied political science at Ahmadu Bello University in 1980 and joined the Nigerian Police Station on December 1, 1981.

Later, he received his law degree from the University of Benin and his master’s degree from the University of Lagos. During his career, he has held several key positions, including the Akwa Ibom State Police Department and the Assistant Inspector General for Intelligence. He also served in Namibia as part of the UN peacekeeping mission and was a member of the Nigerian National Defense Academy.

Arase retired from the police on June 21, 2016, before reaching the mandatory retirement age. He was appointed chairman of the Police Service Commission by the late President Muhammadu Buhari in January 2023. He was removed from the office by President Bola Tinubu in June 2024.
