In an increasingly divided world, symbols of hope, peace and sympathy - Nigerian Christian Society mourns Pope Francis

The Christian Society of Nigeria (CAN), 19 northern states and Abuja chapter, joined the global Christian community to mourn the death of his holy pope Francis.

In a statement issued by its president, Pastor John Hayab, the news of the Pope’s death was described as Catholics and Christians around the world, especially the Roman Catholic communities in northern Nigeria and throughout the country, which is deeply saddened.

Pastor Hayab pointed out that in the time of loss, praying and commemoration are important for people of faith. He described Pope Francis as more than a spiritual leader, calling him a symbol of hope, peace and sympathy in an increasingly divided world. According to him, the Pope’s tenure was marked by significant progress, spiritual awakening and brave reform.

From his Pope, Pope Francis embraced the vision of a church rooted in inclusion, mercy and Christian doctrine. Hayab said the pope brought rare humility, intelligence and deep pastoral attention to his leadership. He represents the poor, defends the environment, and consistently opposes injustice and inequality. He also crossed the religious divide to promote harmony between faiths and without hesitation to challenge oppressed or excluded systems.

The important role of the Roman Catholic Church in the spiritual and social life of many Nigerian communities can be recognized, and it is pointed out that Pope Francis’ influence has been deeply expanded to local parishes, missions and schools. His encouragement of service, dialogue and living faith left a lasting influence, with doctrine far beyond the Vatican.

Pastor Hayab concluded that this moment was not only one of mourning, but also a reflection and celebration. The Christian community in northern Nigeria and Catholics around the world remember Pope Francis’ tireless efforts to promote unity among Christians and among different believers.
