When it comes to how to make money as an artist, many people who are not artists want to know how artists make money, and many experienced artists want to know the same thing!

Of course, artists know that to make money, you have to sell your job. But you may not know other ways to make money.

Apart from doubts, their friends and loved ones often tell the artist that they cannot get a viable career from their passion.

The truth is that while some artists may have a hard time making a living, others achieve a good life by selling jobs and supplementing their income.

That’s why we describe in detail the different ways artists can diversify to make more money from their passion and business:

    (1) Teaching Art – Online or offline

Teaching is one of the main ways to make money as an artist, because teachers get consistent income in the art world, so you can consider teaching art for financial stability.

However, it is important to make sure you have some experience with the role. Many new graduates apply to teach arts but have no experience. Often, these positions are very popular, so you need to consider the strengths.

If you are an active and extroverted artist of artists, then finding students is not a problem. But first, you have to determine which type of teaching is better for you.

    1A) Offline teaching and teaching

If you look closely, you may find that your neighbors offer opportunities to make money with art. If you have an attractive niche such as astronomical photography, calligraphy or street photography, it’s even better.

Some ideas on how you can contribute to the social life of your community while gaining experience and making money:

    • Provide drawing (or any of your major) courses or one-day workshops to adults, children, or high school students in local community centers.
    • Organize exhibitions – Organize individually or invite other artists to participate.
    • Provide brief interactive art workshops for company events and gatherings.
    • Organize a “Plein Air” painting seminar in nature.

    1b) Teach art online

Online teaching courses can be a better choice to attract a larger audience. However, it is much more difficult to coach a few people online at the same time than face to face.

Another option is to turn your teaching into a form of passive income. You have to prepare the material once, and it can bring you income even for months or years.

Some ways you can become an online art teacher:

    • Courses are sold on platforms such as Udemy and Skillshare.
    • Create your own YouTube channel to provide courses for different technologies every week.
    • Sell guides and tutorials on your own website or sell page. These can all take any form – video tutorials, e-books, step-by-step guides with images, etc.

    (2) Build connections with other artists and creatives

The web is one of the main ways to make money as an artist, as it gives you the opportunity to talk to well-known artists, representatives and art buyers. They will give you insights on buying and selling art and may be willing to help you with exposure.

Your career will start to grow motivation as you talk to more people at events and exhibitions. Artists rely on the art world to flourish and succeed, and the only way to join the community is through the Internet.

    (3) Internship

This approach is related to future planning, as it can help artists plan for the future even before they start their business. So it is useful for artists to think about how they will make money years before they actually graduate.

One of the easiest ways to connect in the art world when working with well-known artists and representatives is to attend an art internship.

An internship with the gallery will also give you the opportunity to work behind the scenes of art sales, which can teach you how to sell your artwork.

If you want to do an internship, apply as many as you can; these positions are usually oversubscribed, so there is no guarantee that you will be a place.

    (4) Apply for grants and competitions

This approach cannot be ignored because it also provides artists with a major source of income in terms of how to make money as an artist.

Many international programs, local communities or nonprofits provide grants to artists. These aims are to support young artists, promote culture or solve specific problems.

Other times, local institutions need actual artwork to decorate new buildings or give a good style to the event.

How to apply for these procedures?

Try a simple online search, e.g.Give grants to artists” or”Artist Competition”. To narrow your search, you can add your specific country, state, or city. You may find at least a few contests or programs that you are eligible to enter and win cash or other prizes and have the opportunity to showcase your work.

Also, be sure to follow social media and news from your art or professional community, such as universities, artist associations or NGOs.

    (5) Sell your artwork in a commercial gallery

Selling your artwork in a commercial gallery usually means selling the artist’s work on the committee. Typical committees taken by galleries account for 40 to 50% of work sales.

It depends on the contract. Whether you submit the work for sale through consignment or establish an ongoing relationship with the gallery, all parameters should be written into the contract.
