Popular social media activist VeryDarkMan (VDM) has explained why he is not interested in participating in discussions on electoral reform in Nigeria, describing the process as “dead on arrival”.
In a statement circulating online, the VDM said electoral reforms should not be driven only by social media activists or ordinary citizens, but by key politicians who directly participate in elections. He mentioned that politicians such as Peter Obi, Atiku Abubakar, Nasir El-Rufai and other candidates should take the lead in pushing for reforms.
He believes that young people should not be at the forefront of the struggle, but should play a supporting role behind the politicians who are most affected by the electoral system.
“I cannot waste my time on electoral reform because it will be dead on arrival. Peter Obi, Atiku, El-Rufai and other candidates should be at the forefront of pushing for reform. They young people should be behind them to support them.” The narrator was heard saying in the video
VDM’s comments sparked mixed reactions online, with some agreeing with his stance and others arguing that citizen pressure from young people and activists remains crucial to meaningful electoral change in Nigeria.
