    • The NLC has put aside its planned protests after reaching an agreement with the federal government and are scheduled to take place on March 1, 2025.

    • The agreement involves a 35% increase in telecom tariffs, which is the initially proposed reduction in the 50% rate hike.

    • The National Association of Telecom Subscribers (NATCOMS) welcomes the reduction, but calls for more relief measures to reduce the burden on consumers.

The Nigerian Labor Congress (NLC) plans to shelve its planned protests on March 1, 2025 after reaching a deal with the federal government to increase telecom tariffs by 35%.

According to sources within the NLC, the coalition and federal government have formed a 10-person committee to consider and finalize the agreement.

The Nigeria Communications Commission (NCC) initially announced a 50% escalation of telecom tariffs on January 20, 2025.

However, after negotiations with the NLC, the proposed hike dropped to 35%. Funmi Sessi, chairman of the NLC Lagos State Chapter, had previously condemned the federal government’s decision to approve the tariff, saying it was an unfair burden on already struggling Nigerians.

The National Association of Telecom Subscribers (NATCOMS) welcomes the proposed reduction in tariff rate hikes.

“I believe it’s 35%, but that’s based on what I’ve heard from sources … we fought and reduced by at least 15%.”

However, Ogunbanjo called for more relief measures to reduce the burden on consumers and said: “We should consider further reducing the impact on subscribers.”
