The West African Examinations Commission (WAEC) released results for the May/June 2025 West African High School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) in Lagos on Monday.

The school-based test took place in eight weeks and one day as many Nigerians called for cancellation, falling into controversy. Especially in English papers, many candidates are forced to take exams at night due to delays.

A total of 1,969,313 candidates took the exam, but only 754,545 (38.32%) received at least five mandatory topics, including English and Mathematics. This is a sharp drop of 33.8% from last year’s 72.12%, making it the worst performance in recent history of this WAEC-led school exam. Of the total candidates, 976,787 (49.60%) were male, while 992,526 (50.40%) were female, indicating that more women took the exam. WAEC also announced that candidates sponsored by the state have not paid a review fee and their results will not release their results until their sponsors have fully determined the outstanding fees.
