Osinman scores twice as Nigeria beat Gabon 4-4

Victor Osimhen’s two goals helped Nigeria beat Gabon 4-1 in extra time in Thursday’s Africa World Cup play-off semi-finals. The Super Eagles were expected to win 1-0 after Sevilla’s Akol Adams made a horrific mistake at the Gabonese defense in pouring rain in Rabat, Morocco.

However, Mario Lemina’s deflected shot equalized the match, keeping Gabon’s hopes of qualifying for the World Cup for the first time alive. Fate seemed to have been on their side when the then-in-form Osimhen, who scored a hat-trick in a crucial game against Benin in October, failed to score in a one-on-one in the final seconds of normal time.

But the Galatasaray star made amends in stoppage time as Eric Scherer’s side eventually took control of proceedings. Adams’ club teammate Chidera Ejuke handled Wilfred Ndidi’s pass with aplomb before Osimhen finally scored with an equally accurate shot five minutes later.
Osimhen ensured there was no chance of a comeback early in the second half of overtime, hitting a high ball before driving into space and finishing well.
Nigeria will now face Cameroon or DR Congo in Sunday’s final. Only the winner of this month’s mini-tournament will secure a spot in next March’s continental playoffs and compete for one of two spots in the World Cup group stages.
All games are held in Morocco, giving it the feel of a condensed version of the Africa Cup of Nations, where Africa’s most important competition will be held in December.
