President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has nominated renowned legal expert and scholar, Professor Joash Ojo Amupitan (SAN), as the new Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), pending confirmation by the Senate
The National Council of State unanimously approved Amupitan’s nomination on Thursday, October 9, 2025.
Announcing the development, Presidential Spokesperson Bayo Onanuga said the appointment follows the end of the tenure of Professor Mahmood Yakubu, which started in 2015 and ends in October 2025. President Tinubu described Ampitan as an apolitical figure, noting that he was the first person from Kogi State in the north-central region to be nominated for the position. Kogi State Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo praised Ampitan as “a man of integrity”.
According to the constitution, Tinubu will submit Ampitan’s name to the Senate for screening and confirmation. Amupitan, 58, hails from Ayetoro Gbede in Ijumu Local Government Area of Kogi State. He is a Professor of Law at the University of Jos, where he serves as the Vice-Chancellor (Administration), and is the Vice-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council of the Joseph Ayo Babalola University, Osun State.
Amupitan, a Senior Advocate in Nigeria since 2014, holds a Master of Laws (1993) and a PhD (2007) from the University of Jos. He started his academic career in 1989 after completing his National Youth Service at Bauchi State Publishing Company. Amupitan has held several academic leadership positions, including Dean of the University of Jos School of Law and Chairman of the Council of Deans and Directors. He has also held board positions in the private sector and with national legal education institutions.
An accomplished author, Amupitan has published books on corporate law, evidence and corporate governance, including Corporate Governance: Models and Principles and The Law of Evidence: Theory and Practice in Nigeria. He is married and has four children.
