Radio lifts GM suspension that criticizes Governor Ebony

Legacy FM, a private station in Ebony, suspended his allegations of misconduct after his acting general manager, Godfrey Chikwere, recovered for a few days.

Management confirmed on Monday night that Chikwere will perform its duties starting August 12, 2025, turning around a decision that sparked dialogue on press freedom

    state.

Chikwere’s suspension comes after he repeatedly criticized Francis Nwifuru. At the time, Legacy FM accused him of showing unruly behavior and violating the organization’s code of conduct. The directive also directed him to hand over all the company’s property to the next senior official, a move that was punitive in nature.

The development has evoked reactions from media stakeholders. Ayo Makinde, president of the Lagos chapter of the Nigerian Broadcasting Society (SNB), expressed concern about what he described as an increasing pattern of intervention and attacks on NBC. He believes that such actions threaten constitutional freedoms, erode public trust and prevent citizens from participating in governance.

Makinde pointed to other recent events, such as the order of the Niger State Governor Umar Bago to shut down Badeggi FM 90.1, evidence of growing hostility to independent broadcasts. He urged government officials and media owners to protect the independence of the news, warning that undermining it would undermine democratic development.
