Prince Al Waleed bin Khaled Bin Talal, known as the “sleeping prince” of Saudi Arabia, has died for nearly two decades after falling into a coma in a devastating car accident in 2005.

The prince is the nephew of billionaire investor Alwaleed bin Talal, who has maintained 19 years of life support and has become a powerful symbol of perseverance and faith in the entire Arab world. His condition was followed by millions, who insisted on a miracle, especially when the viral videotape five years ago seemed to show a slight movement of his fingers, many were interpreted as signs of possible recovery.

The royal family announced his death on Saturday in a statement via X (formerly Twitter) that expressed “deep sorrow and grief.” His funeral is scheduled to be held in Riyadh on Sunday.

Prince Al Valade’s journey has aroused a wide range of emotions over the years. Photos and updates shared by his family often show him surrounded by the Saudi flag with a noteworthy image that read: “Our country is in our hearts.”

His death marked the end of a vigil of nearly 20 years, capturing the hearts of many and attracting tributes from citizens and guests who admire the family’s lasting hope and love.
