    • SERAP has filed suit over the 50% telecom tariff hike that was recently approved by the Nigeria Communications Commission (NCC).

    • The tariff hike will increase the average price from N11 to N16.5, 1GB of data from N287.5/GB, and SMS prices starting from N4.

    • Serap is seeking a declaration that the NCC’s decision was arbitrary, unfair and unconstitutional.

The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) brought President Bola Tinubu and the Nigeria Communications Commission (NCC) to the recent 50% telecommunications tariff hike.

The suit, filed at the Federal High Court in Abuja, challenged the “arbitrary, unconstitutional, illegal, unfair and unreasonable” decision to increase telecommunications tariffs.

According to Serap, the tariff hike will have a disproportionate impact on citizens’ freedom of expression and access to information.

The NCC’s decision was made unilaterally and has been criticized for its potential impact on consumers.

Serap argued that the NCC failed to follow proper procedures and a reasonable interpretation of its well-known regulations and guidelines.

The organization is seeking to protect the rights of citizens and ensure that the government and its agencies act in accordance with the law.

Serap’s lawyer, Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa, of San Francisco, said the group is committed to fighting for citizens’ rights and ensuring that governments are held accountable for their actions.
