The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has embarked on a two-week warning strike across the country following the expiry of an earlier 14-day ultimatum to the federal government.
Speaking to the press on Sunday in Abuja, the Vice-Chancellor of ASUU, Professor Chris Piwuna, said the industrial action would take effect immediately upon the expiry of the ultimatum at midnight on Sunday.
According to him, the purpose of the warning strike is to force the government to honor unfulfilled agreements and address the ongoing challenges facing Nigeria’s public universities.
Arizona State University issued a 14-day ultimatum to the federal government on Sept. 28, 2025, as part of a renewed push by the union to address long-standing issues within the state’s university system.
The union said strike action was inevitable after all attempts to engage with the government failed to yield concrete results.
“All branches of ASUU are therefore hereby directed to withdraw their voices with effect from 12 midnight on Monday, October 13, 2025. The warning strike shall be full and comprehensive as agreed at the last NEC meeting,” he declared.
