“This is a very stupid thing.” Prime Minister Candian PM Trudeau

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau asserted that the country officially began on Tuesday, March 4, amid escalating trade conflicts with the United States.

Speaking to the country after Washington decided to impose a 25% tariff on nearly all Canadian exports – excluding some energy products that face lower interest rates, Trudeau reiterated his government’s commitment to responding to countermeasures. Billions of retaliatory tariffs have been imposed and other measures will be taken in the coming weeks.

“It makes a lot of sense,” Trudeau said in a comparison between the U.S. stance on Canada’s position on Russia.

“Canadians are reasonable, we are polite, but we don’t retreat from the fight. “Not when the well-being of our country and everyone is threatened,” he said. “He said the tariffs were unreasonable.

Trudeau acknowledged the challenges ahead, warning: “It will be tough.” He assured Canadians that the federal government will use “every tool” to support those affected.

Trudeau also addressed U.S. citizens, noting: “Your administration has chosen to do this to you.”

U.S. President Donald Trump claims Canada has failed to adequately curb people and drugs’ actions at the border. However, data from both countries does not support these claims.

Trudeau refuted Trump’s reasoning as “completely false”, asserting that Canada’s borders are already safe. He noted that a $1.3 billion border plan was recently launched, which included other personnel, drones and helicopters, and the appointment of the “Fentanyl Czar”.

“We stepped up. We worked closely with the President and his administration. We did everything we promised. We insisted on our words. We did this because we believe in working together to protect our citizens,” Trudeau said.

He spoke directly to Trump and recalled their working relationship: “In over eight years, I worked with me, and we did a lot of things. We have signed a historical agreement that has created record work and growth in both of our countries. We have done important things on the world stage… Now, we should work together to ensure that North Americans are more prosperous in a very uncertain and challenging world.”

Trudeau quoted an unexpected source, adding: “It’s not my habit to agree with the Wall Street Journal, but Donald pointed out that even if you’re a very smart person, it’s a very stupid thing to do.”

He warned that the trade war would only benefit the opponent: “The battle between our two friends is exactly what our opponents want to see.”

Trudeau also accused Trump of intentionally damaging the Canadian economy and even seeking to annex the country. “First of all, this will never happen. We will never be the 51st state. But yes, he could cause damage to the Canadian economy, he started this morning,” he said.

“But, as American families are going to discover, he will quickly discover that this will hurt people on both sides of the border.”
