    • A police officer was detained for mistakenly shooting a 14-year-old student.
    • The incident took place on Tuesday along Gbagi-Alakia Road in Ibadan.
    • The victim, Kehinde Alade, is taking the Senior High School Certificate Examination.

A police officer who mistakenly killed a 14-year-old WASSCE candidate in Ibadan has been detained.

The unfortunate incident happened Tuesday along Gbagi-Alakia Road, while student Kehinde Alade was sitting down for his senior high school certificate exam.

According to police public relations officer CSP Adewale Osifeso, the officer involved was a corporal, although his name has not been released yet.

Police Commissioner Johnson Adenola has conducted a thorough investigation into the matter and assigned the case to the deputy commissioner responsible for the state’s Criminal Investigation Department (SCID).

Police revealed that Odunayo Alade, the father of Kehinde, who was driving the vehicle, was suspected of driving recklessly.

He was driving traffic and attempted to evade arrest in a joint traffic control operation between the police and the OYO State Traffic Administration (OYRTMA).

“Alade is both a parent and driver of the Black Honda and a registered number FST 639 JJ, who collided with a patrol vehicle belonging to Oyrtma and a policeman Buffalo Patrol Truck while trying to avoid arrest for reckless driving, Police said.

“To stop further injuries, a police corporal fired a gun into the tires of the car. Sadly, the bullet missed and hit Kehinde Alade in the back seat behind the driver.”

He was immediately taken to the University College Hospital (UCH), where he was confirmed to die upon arrival, the statement added.

Since then, his body has been stored in autopsy and preservation at Adeoyo State Hospital.

To prevent any possible interference, Commissioner Adenola deployed tactical and intelligence teams, including the Police Mobile Force (PMF), to the site and other key areas in Ibadan. This quick action helps restore calm and ensure public safety.

The OYO State Police Department expressed its heartfelt condolences to the Alade family and reiterated its commitment to justice and accountability. As the investigation moves forward, more details will be released.
